World Mental Health day

Today, October 10th, 2023, is the 75th World Mental Health Day. This day allows people from all around the world to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize efforts to tackle the growing mental health problem.

QUICK STATISTICS

Source: CAMH; Mental Health Statistics

Mental health is an important aspect of physical health. Good mental health allows a person to reach their potential and deal with the normal stresses of life. Subsequently, poor mental health can affect every aspect of your physical health. Mental illness and substance use disorders are leading causes of disability in Canada.

Unfortunately, there is still a large stigma when it comes to mental health issues. In 2019, a survey showed that 75% of respondents said they would be reluctant to disclose a mental illness to an employer or co-worker. However, 76% of respondents stated that they themselves would be comfortable and supportive towards a colleague with a mental illness.

No one person is immune to mental health issues. It is important to not feel ashamed about speaking to someone about your mental health concerns and seek help. Seeking help early can make a huge difference so it is important to recognize the signs of decreasing mental health and seek medical help early.
